Supercapacitors also known ultracapacitors and electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are capacitors with capacitance values greater than any other capacitor type available today. Supercapacitors are breakthrough energy storage and delivery devices that offer millions of times more capacitance than traditional capacitors.

What is electric double layer capacitor (EDLC)?

Electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) [1, 2] is the electric energy storage system based on charge–discharge process (electrosorption) in an electric double layer on porous electrodes, which are used as memory back-up devices because of their high cycle efficiencies and their long life-cycles. A schematic illustration of EDLC is shown in Fig. 1.

How to determine capacitance of a double layer supercapacitor?

The capacitance determination is based on the fundamental formula Q = C x V. But, at constant current Q = I x t. That means that according to the figure: C x (V 1 -V 2) = I x (t 2 -t 1). Figure 15. Why do supercapacitors have a higher capacitance?

The thickness of the double layer reflects the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC). The deeper the electric double layer, the higher capacitance behavior is observed. Supercapacitors can be systematized into two major sorts of EDLCs and pseudocapacitors depending on the charge storage mechanism.
